It's hard to know where to start with this one. Released at the end of 1997, Titanic broke nearly every movie record in existence and won 11 Oscars. Chances are you've already seen, discussed, and formulated an opinion on this one. In the off chance you haven't, here are my two cents:
I personally feel that Titanic deserved all of the accolades that it received. The movie took a genre traditionally reserved for campy, ensemble flicks and turned it on its head. I have this theory that only a small fraction of movies actually deserve to be over 2 hours in length. At 194 minutes, that stacks things against Titanic pretty heavily. The fact of the matter is, I don't mind Titanic's length at all and am glad that it maintained its epic feel by not cutting anything.
The movie itself is strong in most every category. There is a very good blend of romance, tragedy, humor, and action. The bad guys are bad and the good guys are fun to root for...just how it should be. While I'll be the first to admit that the panned out CG shots of the ships certainly show their age, the onboard disaster shots that did so much to contribute to the $200M budget remain some of the most exhilarating I've seen.
This is truly a benchmark film that all other films can be compared to. Sadly, James Cameron has essentially dropped off the face of the earth as a director since this one after putting out two of the best movies of the nineties (Titanic and Terminator 2). Here's to hoping that he'll revisit the disaster genre before he calls it a career.
