The first two characters we meet in this movie are an archaeologist and a entomologist. Given that little piece of information, the fact that it takes a solid 90 minutes of film before we see that the big threat to humanity is a bunch of bugs who are breeding underground is a little sad. When miniseries are good, it's because they really get to spend time laying a foundation and building up to something in a way that only books usually can. When they are bad, and this one is really bad, it's because they have an 80 minute script that some studio tried to turn into a 2 or 3 night special. This movie lacks the writing or ambition to come close to justifying miniseries length.
Two quick disaster film rules: If you are going to call a movie Final Days of Planet Earth, then it had better be epic. If you are going to have a giant bug sucking the life out of Earth for boxart, then you had better deliver some destruction. I don't subscribe to the school of thought that thinks a high body count guarantees a good movie, but I do believe that a disaster film has to have some guts. Final Days of Planet Earth runs 175 minutes and somehow never manages to leave the Bay Area or put more than about a dozen people in the face of danger. If corny sci-fi disaster movies are you thing and you are still considering this movie, let me remind you that you could finish two Cold War alien pics in the same three hours and at least get a good dose of nostalgia.
Wondering why I still gave this film a star? It gets some marks for casting Daryl Hannah (the zombie-like seductress from Blade Runner and Wall Street) as a zombie-like seductress/destroyer of humanity.
