Review: 1.5 stars
There are times when Disaster Zone: Volcano in New York feels surprisingly like a full blown Hollywood movie. However, the budget and a lack of originality keep it from becoming anything memorable.

I would like to tip my hat to director Robert Lee for putting out a B-movie that has at least some pacing and a nice ensemble of characters. I will also never complain with the use of either sleazy politicians or mad scientists as bad guys (this one has both). What did bother me about this movie was the uncanny similarity to 1997's Volcano. Let's review the similarities. Major metropolitan area threatened by a nascent volcano? Check. Diverse team of everyday engineers and laborers called upon to save the day? Check. Explosives used to redirect lava through the existing infrastructure of said metropolitan area into the ocean? Check.

The wonderful thing about B-movies is that they don't have to have the sort of focus group-approved scripts that make Hollywood action films feel so stale sometimes. Volcano in New York messes with a potentially good thing by not embracing its B-movieness. If I can watch the same thing with better special effects somewhere else, I'll go do that any day.
